our Mission

The mission of Ascension Lutheran Church is to glorify God and to bring people to a full personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

our Worship Style

Ascension offers a "blended" service on Sunday mornings. Typical components include traditional hymns and contemporary praise songs, bible readings, confession, a sermon, prayers, and communion.

our Outreach

Ascension supports several missionaries in Turkey, the Ukraine, Sierra Leone, Spain, and has recently made several trips to serve in Haiti.

In addition, members of Ascension are closely involved with several ministries in Ames, including the Butterfly Freedom House and the Overflow Thrift Store.

our Leadership

Ascension is led by Pastor Roger Twito, along with our Deaconess, Worship Director, and the church council.

our Affiliation

Originally a member of the former American Lutheran Church (ALC), Ascension voted to drop its membership in that synod in 1987. On January 19, 1990, Ascension voted to affiliate with the American Association of Lutheran Churches (AALC). Find out more about the AALC here, or click here to learn what we believe.

our History

Ascension was founded on Ascension Sunday, May 2, 1965, in the church building formerly housing Bethesda Lutheran Church. (Bethesda Lutheran built a new church building and relocated in 1964. Ascension began services a year later in the vacated facility.) Beginning in the early 1990's, Ascension's leadership identified a need for more space and parking, and more accessible facilities. In the early 2000's, Ascension purchased 7 acres of land on Bloomington Road. After years of prayer and planning, including two successful Capital Campaigns, Ascension contracted with Harold Pike Construction and built a new facility at 2400 Bloomington Road. The church relocated to this facility in March 2012.
